Giving back to the University

Throughout my time at Penn State, I have learned from so many student leaders from the clubs that I belong to.  They taught me how to effectively run an organization, which led me to running for positions on Executive Boards.  My sophomore year, I was the EMEX (The College of Earth and Mineral Sciences Exposition) Alumni/Faculty Relations Chair.  After my experience with EMEX, I knew I wanted to tackle an even bigger position.  My junior year, I was elected the treasurer for the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences Student Council.  I then accepted a position as a Communications Captain for THON 2012.  I have included a summary of my responsibilities for each of these positions below.

Communications Captain for THON 2012

Being a part of the largest student-run philanthropy in the world is my biggest achievement.  This past year, I was a Communications Captain, which made me one of the faces of THON.  I was both a General and Special Organization Liaison and a Special Projects Captain.  What does that mean?  I'll go into more detail.

General & Special Interest Organization Liaison:
  • Kept in contact with 46 organizations to make sure they were on the right track with their fundraising goals for the year
  • Updated the organizations about upcoming events and deadlines
  • Boosted morale by giving organization leaders some creative ideas to get their members to attend fundraisers and events

Special Projects Captain:
  • Along with a co-captain, organize and plan meetings with our committee of 28 students
  • Planned blood drives and other events throughout the year
